Check, Please (Jazz Ensemble Arrangement)
This medium-advanced chart is playable by high school and college level bands. Hints of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Fred Sturm abound, and a simple melody is enhanced by groovy rhythmic highlights and intricate saxophone phrases. The electric bass player has the option of improvising over horn pads during the “bridge” of the tune, and an open solo section features a straightforward I-V progression, with chord changes written into every horn part. There is a written bass line for bassists to follow, along with chord voicings for the pianist. The chart can feature either guitar or vibraphone (or both). Jackson Churchill wrote this in honor of his first principal David Maxwell in celebration of his 20 years of service to Valley High School in West Des Moines, IA.
Other Considerations:
5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar/vibraphone, piano, electric bass, drums
Lead trumpet highest note: functionally, written F5; there is a phrase up to written C6, but it can be taken down the octave
Lead trombone highest note: written Bb4
Bass trombone lowest note: written Eb2
Play time: 5:00-6:00
