Valley View (Jazz Ensemble Arrangement)
This chart of medium difficulty is playable by high school and college level bands. The range of the trumpet parts is suitable for developing trumpet players, and the scoring promotes development of blend and balance within and between each instrument section. There is an extended saxophone soli, with brief spotlights for the trumpet and trombone sections. Chord changes are written into the alto sax 1, trumpet 2, and trombone 2 parts, but they can be played by any instrument using variations of the concert F major and minor pentatonic scales. There is a written bass line for bassists to follow, along with chord voicings for the pianist. The chart can feature either guitar or vibraphone (or both). Valley View was written in honor of the two prominent valleys in Jackson Churchill’s life: the Oneota Valley in Jackson’s college town of Decorah, Iowa, and West Des Moines Valley, where Jackson teaches high school band.
Other Considerations:
5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar/vibraphone, piano, bass, drums
Lead trumpet highest note: Written G5
Lead trombone highest note: written Ab4
Bass trombone lowest note: functionally, written Eb2; one phrase drops to Db2
Play time: 7:00-8:30
